June 10 - Saint Ignatius, Bishop of Rostov

The saint of God got up from the coffin, and walked through the air. He rose up high over the church, blessed all the people and the entire city, and entered the cave where his tomb was . . .

Saint Ignatius, Bishop of Rostov

In the thirteenth century, in the Theophany Monastery of Rostov the Great, the monk Ignatius humbly served the Lord in full renunciation of the world. He was famous for his virtuous life, among the higher ranks of clergy as well as among the brothers.

Ignatius was ordained as the bishop of Rostov. Having taken the diocese under his care, he shepherded his flock with great attention, zeal, and love. The saint labored to enlighten the pagans with the Christian faith.

He founded the Trinity Monastery near the White Lake, where he preached the Gospel to the Karelians and the Chude. Bishop Ignatius went to the Horde many times to settle matters for his flock. Thus, Saint Ignatius spent twenty-six years in labors and cares, until he presented himself to the Lord.

All of Rostov gathered at the church when they did Saint Ignatius' funeral. People cried and wept, mourning the death of their pastor and teacher, their helper and protector in troubles and misfortunes, the intercessor for widows and orphans, the one who fed the poor and needy.

Two nuns who had come to pay their respects to the saint, and several other people, saw a wondrous vision: The saint of God got up from the coffin, and walked through the air. He rose up high over the church, blessed all the people and the entire city, and entered the cave where his tomb was.

By this the Lord showed the people that Bishop Ignatius received mercy from the Lord, and was made worthy of a place with the saints. Many other miracles happened that day, indisputably testifying that Saint Ignatius is a great intercessor for all the living, and prayers to him are the source of many miracles.

The tenth of June is the feast day of Saint Ignatius, Bishop of Rostov.
