June 7 - The Third Finding of the Head of John the Baptist

The Third Finding of the Head of the Forerunner and Baptist John

This joyful event for the whole Orthodox world happened in the year 850. For the third time, Christians found the honorable head of the Holy Prophet John the Forerunner, who had baptized the Lord.

Until that time, it had been hidden in the ground because of the iconoclasts. But with time, because of the troubles and unrest, the holy place was forgotten. The Orthodox people mourned over the loss of such an important and deeply honored relic.

And when peace reigned again in the Church, and the veneration of icons was established, while Patriarch Ignatius was praying, it was revealed to him where the head of St. John the Baptist was hidden.

The Patriarch told this great news to the Emperor, and the honorable head of the Forerunner was found again in Comana, in the same place that was shown to Patriarch Ignatius.

The honorable head of the Forerunner and Baptist John was ceremoniously transferred to Constantinople. And it was put in the palace church on this day, the twenty-fifth of May on the Old Calendar.

The seventh of June is the feast day of the Finding of the Honorable Head of the Forerunner and Baptist John.
