The Holy Fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils

There were seven great councils: two in Nicaea, three in Constantinople, one in Ephesus, and one in Chalcedon. The holy Fathers gathered during the most difficult periods of history in the life of the Church. They confirmed the Orthodox faith, and developed those dogmas, canons, and laws that are indisputably carried out in our Church to this day.

They put together the Symbol of Faith (Nicene Creed), defended the Church from false teachings, and preserved pure Orthodoxy.

The Holy Fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils

Today the Church honors the memory of the Holy Fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils.

These councils of bishops, the shepherds and teachers of the church, were held from the fourth to the seventh centuries, to fight against the heresies that threatened the true faith, and also to explain the correct, Orthodox doctrine to Christians.

The councils are called 'ecumenical' when bishops gather from all parts of the world where Christianity is, and affirm the truth of Christ under the influence of the Holy Spirit. They are accepted by the whole church of Christ.

There were seven of them: two in Nicaea, three in Constantinople, one in Ephesus, and one in Chalcedon.

They defended and confirmed the veneration of holy icons.

These holy fathers, whom all Orthodox Christians especially honor, possessed the great gift of making the unerring definitions of Christian faith and church piety in the most critical moments of the Church's history.

The Seventh Sunday after Pascha is the feast day of the Holy Fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils.
