The Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ

"Men of Galilee, why are you standing here and looking at the sky? Jesus, who has ascended into Heaven, will come again in the same manner as you saw Him go up into Heaven."

The Ascension of the Lord

Today the whole Orthodox world celebrates a great event: the Lord's Ascension, which was the completion of the earthly life of Jesus Christ, and his return to Heaven in the flesh.

When the fortieth day after his Resurrection had come, the Lord gathered his disciples at the foot of the Mount of Olives, and said to them,

"Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you. But tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high. For John baptized you with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit a few days from now."

The disciples surrounded their Teacher, and gladdened by his words, they asked Him, "Are you going to restore the
kingdom of Israel now, Lord?"

To this the Saviour replied,

"It is not for you to know the days or the times that the Father has put in His power. But you will receive strength when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will preach about me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the earth."

As He was saying the last few words, He raised his hands, and began to ascend into the heavens, blessing His disciples. Soon, a cloud hid Him from sight. The disciples rejoiced, and worshiping the ascended Lord, they continued to stand there, looking up at the sky.

Then two holy angels appeared before them, and said,

"Men of Galilee, why are you standing here and looking at the sky? Jesus, who has ascended into Heaven, will come again in the same manner as you saw Him go up into Heaven."

Then the disciples returned to Jerusalem with great joy, waiting for the Holy Spirit to descend upon them. They were continually in the temple, praying ceaselessly and praising the Lord. They knew that the Lord would be with them now and unto ages of ages, and no one had the power to separate them.
