“I perceive such a statement to be blasphemous,” the head of the Moscow Patriarchate's Department for External Church Relations, Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) of Volokolamsk, said on the "Russia 24" TV channel. "And I think that people who promote such ideas should be put in jail, because, from my point of view, it is a crime to cripple an eight-year-old child or even a sixteen-year-old child."
He noted that children "should at least have the right to grow up before making this kind of decision, because if a person, having changed their sex, then changes their mind, it is no longer possible to return the original sex."
The Metropolitan stressed that "no real change of sex actually takes place."
“It only creates the appearance that a person begins to belong to the opposite sex. . . . For an adult, such an operation is nothing more than mutilation. And to subject children to such operations, I believe that this is a crime, which should be followed by criminal punishment, and those who spread the propaganda of such operations should receive criminal punishment as well,” added the head of the DECR MP.
