Russians Building Church in Holy Land for Orthodox Christians


On February 28, 2021, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the head of the Russian spiritual mission in Jerusalem, Archimandrite Alexander (Elisov) accompanied by his deputy, hieromonk Dometian (Markarian), visited northern Israel.

During his trip, Archimandrite Alexander visited the village of Sakhnin, where with the blessing of His Beatitude, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem a church is being built for the local Christian population, who have historically practiced Orthodoxy.

The peculiarity of the northern cities and towns of Israel is that the Christian population here is indigenous, and for many centuries has remained faithful to their religious convictions, despite the many political changes. This explains the special concern of the Primate of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church for the pastoral care of this region. Sharing the concerns of the Jerusalem Church, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia made a contribution to the temple under construction and donated a carved altar for the main altar in honor of the Nativity of the Mother of God, as well as two altars for the chapels of the temple. Archimandrite Alexander met with Dr. M. Gantus, and representatives of the parish community, who were encouraged by the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church in their work.

The Parish Council urged the Head of the Mission to convey their gratitude to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, noting that his kind gesture would be remembered by present and future generations of local Christians.

Before the meeting began, Archimandrite Alexander and his companions visited the branch of the Russian Spiritual Mission in Magdala, where they celebrated the Sunday Divine Liturgy in the church in honor of St. Mary Magdalene, Equal-to-the-Apostles.
