The Church of Cyprus expressed gratitude to Boy George (George Alan O’Dowd), an English singer and songwriter, for returning an icon of Jesus Christ that was believed to be stolen from a Church in the Turkish occupied Northern part of the island. According to Boy George, he purchased the icon in 1985 from a London-based vendor.
Boy George, who had not been aware of the history of the icon, handed it over to Bishop Porphyrios in London last Tuesday. Archbishop Chrysostomos II lauded the singer for the kind gesture, stating that he did the right thing by returning the icon to its original owner. “We thank him, and if he ever comes to Cyprus, we will certainly welcome him,” stated the Archbishop.
