Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked the head of the cabinet, Denis Shmygal, to consider legalizing same-sex unions in the country.

This was a response to a petition that was published on July 3 and contained a proposal to legalize same-sex marriages in Ukraine. By now it has already been signed by over 28,000 people.

In his response, published on the website of electronic petitions, the head of state reminds that, according to the Family Code of Ukraine, the family is the primary and basic unit of society. "The family consists of persons who live together, are bound by a common household, have mutual rights and obligations. According to the Constitution of Ukraine, marriage is based on the free consent of a woman and her husband (Article 51)," Zelensky specifies.

According to him, under conditions of martial law or state of emergency, the Constitution of Ukraine cannot be changed. "At the same time, the government has worked out options for solutions to legalize registered civil partnership in Ukraine as part of the work to approve and ensure human rights and freedoms," the president added.

"According to Article 116 of the Constitution of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine takes measures to ensure the rights and freedoms of man and citizen. Taking the above mentioned into account, I applied to the Prime Minister of Ukraine with the request to consider the issue raised in the electronic petition and to inform about the corresponding results", - concluded Zelensky.
