Western elites serve the interests of transnational corporations, even at the expense of lives and health of their own citizens, who have become hostages of other people's interests, said Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Nikolai Patrushev at the 17th annual meeting of Secretaries of Security Councils of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on August 19, reports the press service of the Russian Security Council.

"It is not only in Ukraine that ordinary citizens have become hostages of the elites who deceived or forcefully seized power. We see the same in the West," Patrushev said, pointing to the actions of the US, EU and British authorities, which bring obvious harm to their inhabitants, but thereby ensure the economic interests of transnational corporations.

"The goal is the same - to get the maximum economic benefit, even if it will be paid by taxes, well-being, and often - lives and health of their citizens. As a result, ordinary Americans and Europeans continue to suffer from inflation and socio-economic problems," the secretary of the Russian Security Council described the situation.

Patrushev noted that protest actions against the worsening of the social and economic problems are happening and may become more active in the future, which can lead to political changes.
