No Vaccine Mandates for Priests, Says Russian Church Spokesman

Vladimir Legoyda emphasized that Metropolitan Hilarion was only expressing his personal opinion.

The Russian Orthodox Church is not forcing priests to be vaccinated. Vladimir Legoyda, a member of the Synodal Biblical and Theological Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church, spoke on this topic during an interview with Vladimir Soloviev on the Soloviev LIVE YouTube channel.

Vladimir Legoyda said, “I don’t think that the church will oblige anyone [to be vaccinated]. After all, we stand for free human decisions. In addition, some people have medical indications against vaccination.”

He also commented on the words spoken by Metropolitan Hilarion, regarding the supposed need to vaccinate church workers against COVID-19. Vladimir Legoyda emphasized that Metropolitan Hilarion was only expressing his personal opinion.

Though there is a reported increase in the incidence of coronavirus cases in Russia, there are no plans to close any churches, and there are no plans to adopt any new anti-epidemic measures in the churches.
