Today, there are only 11 ancient manuscripts in the world written in Glagolitic script, and the Mariinsky Gospel in the Russian State Library is one of them . . .
The Mariinsky Gospel — a restored unique monument of early Slavonic Glagolitic writing of the X-XI centuries — was presented on April 5, 2021 in the Pashkov House in Moscow.
During the presentation, the Minister of Culture of Russia Olga Lyubimova passed the Gospel from the restorers to the Department of manuscripts of the Russian State Library, according to the website of the Russian State Library.
The presentation and transfer of the Gospel took place within the framework of the V International scientific-practical seminar "Document restoration: conservatism and innovation - 2021".
It is reported that according to the basic version, the manuscript was found by the famous scholar and collector Viktor Grigorovich (1815-1876) on Athos, in the Russian skete of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whence came the name of the Gospel - Mariinsky.
This Gospel, known in Bulgarian and Macedonian scientific literature as the Codex Marianus, is the oldest manuscript written in Glagolitic script on parchment. Linguists have established that the text uses the old Slavic language of the Serbian edition.
The monument of spirituality and literature is decorated with floral and woven ornaments and three miniatures: the Evangelists Mark, Luke, and John. Presumably there was also a fourth miniature, the Evangelist Matthew, but over time this page was lost.
Today, there are only 11 ancient manuscripts in the world written in Glagolitic script, and the Mariinsky Gospel in the Russian State Library is one of them. The restoration of this monument took place from 2017 to 2020.
A digital copy of the Mariinsky Gospel (before restoration) is available in the "Book Monuments" section of the National Digital Library.
