The main business of monks is prayer, so the external activities of monasteries must be carried out by the laity under the guidance of the monastic residents . . .
Archimandrite Melkhizedek (Artyukhin), superior of the Moscow Optina Hermitage, press secretary of the Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism of the Russian Orthodox Church, said on May 18 that the rapid addiction of monks to gadgets does not affect their main ministry positively, so we should limit the use of technical means, the website of the Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism reported.
Archimandrite Melchizedek (Artyukhin) made his statement as part of the framework of the monastic direction of the XXIX International Educational Readings, held from May 16 to 19 in Moscow.
According to him, external activities are an important part of the life of any monastery, but they are secondary to the main work of the monks - prayer, so if possible, the external activities of monasteries should be carried out mainly by laymen, but directed by the monastic residents.
