According to RIA Novosti, a major Russian news outlet, an Orthodox icon has started miraculously streaming myrrh in the Orenburg region, the same part of Russia which has recently seen major flooding.
The Orenburg diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church reported on their Telegram channel that with the arrival of the recent major flood in Orenburg, something extraordinary has happened: In the home of a parishioner from the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos began streaming myrrh.
The diocese relayed the following information, which the parishioner had provided in reference to this particular icon:
“She spoke about the icon, which her family had carefully preserved for many years. When the Bolsheviks destroyed churches in the Oktyabrsky district, this icon of the Most Holy Theotokos was saved from desecration. Nadezhda’s mother prayed for a long time at the icon. It seemed to her daughter that she was talking to her as if she were alive. When her mother passed away, Nadezhda took the icon for herself and now stands before it in prayer. The woman testifies that at the beginning of the Northern War the icon changed its appearance and became myrrh-streaming. The same thing happened with the onset of the flood in Orenburg.”
When asked about the reasons why an icon would start streaming myrrh, a diocese representative provided the following explanation:
“Icons stream myrrh in times of grief or during a dangerous situation, calling for a change in your attitude to life, to what is happening. In addition, an icon can stream myrrh, showing sinners that they are committing spiritual offenses [and that they need to repent].”
