The Rostov Kremlin, one of the most famous architectural ensembles of Russia’s Golden Ring, has been waiting for its well-deserved inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List for more than twenty years. The builder of the Rostov Kremlin was Metropolitan Jonah III (Sysoevich; 1607-1691), who during his administration of the diocese erected the ensemble, unique in its integrity, including house churches, chambers, and administrative and domestic buildings. His church-building activity is an exceptional phenomenon of the Russian artistic culture of the second half of the seventeenth century. Few patrons in the entire history of ancient Russian art could compare with him in the scope and consistency of the implementation of his plan, according to which an image of Paradise on Earth was to appear not far from Lake Nero in the center of the ancient city of Rostov.
