It is now possible to get acquainted with the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow without leaving home (click here). For this purpose a 3D virtual photo-video tour was created, reported the press service of the Moscow Patriarchate.

The 3D tour allows to view not only the architecture and decorations of the main church of the country, but also to see the surrounding sights from the temple observation deck. Virtual visitors can get up to the Orthodox shrines stored in the temple - the reliquaries with pieces of the Robe of the Lord, the Robe of the Mother of God, the relics of the prophet John the Baptist and the Apostle Andrew, the reliquary of Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna Philaret (Drozdov) and others. And also to visit the Church of Transfiguration (lower church), the Hall of church councils and even get into the altar, which is usually inaccessible to ordinary believers.

Special information signs help not to get lost. They also tell about the architecture of the temple, the sacred objects and images.

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built in the 1990s on the like-named temple, demolished in 1931 during the Stalinist reconstruction of Moscow. Initially it was dedicated to the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812. Its construction lasted almost half a century. The largest architects and painters of the country took part in the creation of the temple and its painting.

After an explosion in the cathedral, it was planned to build the Palace of Soviets in its place. The project turned out to be unsuccessful, and since the 1960s there has been a swimming pool "Moscow".

An initiative group of Orthodox believers to rebuild the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was assembled in 1988. By the mid-1990s the cathedral was rebuilt. Now it has the status of the Patriarchal Metochion (its rector is now Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia), and is a collective cenotaph of the soldiers of the Russian Imperial Army who died in the war against Napoleon. The total height of the temple reaches 103 meters. It can accommodate 10 thousand people.
