Attempts to Demonize Russian Church are Conspiracies, Said Greek Bishop

"We must fight against the manipulation of our Church, against injustice, religious racism and ethnophyletism, regardless of personal costs, striving for justice and the unity of Orthodoxy". . .

In an interview with the newspaper Kathimerini-Cyprus, Metropolitan Isaiah of Tamassos stated that the Russian Orthodox Church has never interfered in the affairs of the Cyprus Church.

Answering a journalist's question about how he relates to the concerns expressed about the attempts of the Russian Church to lead the Cypriot Church, Metropolitan Isaiah stressed: "The Russian Church has never tried to interfere in our internal affairs."

Currently, the geopolitical conflict between East and West is growing, Bishop Isaiah said in an interview with a media representative. In Cyprus, this phenomenon is clearly expressed in all spheres: economy, journalism and political activity. “Our desire is to work with everyone within the framework of mutual respect,” the bishop emphasized. - The "concern" you mentioned was introduced consciously, methodically and patiently by various decision-making centers through their bodies. Unfortunately, all modern means of propaganda and discrediting of opponents are used, such as, for example, "exposing" pseudo-sites that "reveal" conspiracies. "

At the same time, he noted that "if before everyone welcomed Russians in Cyprus, now, due to geopolitical and geostrategic interests, everything Russian is demonized, and this fact directly affects those who have church relations with them."

The hierarch was also asked whether there really exists in the Holy Synod of the Cypriot Orthodox Church a certain “fifth column” of hierarchs sympathetic to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. “We will not show patriotism, yielding to the will of the Archbishop [of Cyprus] and the mighty of this world, in order thereby to comfortably settle under the “roof and protection” of the “big brother”, Metropolitan Isaiah said. - We must fight against the manipulation of our Church, against injustice, religious racism and ethnophyletism, regardless of personal costs, striving for justice and the unity of Orthodoxy. Rumors of a "fifth column" are threats, intimidation and blackmail in order to change our opinion on the issue of neutrality [on the "Ukrainian question" - approx. ed.] ".

In October 2020, four hierarchs - Metropolitans of Kykkos Nikifor, Athanasius of Limassol, Isaiah of Tamassos and Bishop Nicholas of Amaphunta - called on the head of the Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos, to cancel the anti-canonical and invalid act of recognition of the "Orthodox Church of Ukraine". In this regard, the interviewer inquired why the hierarchs made a public statement against the Archbishop of Cyprus, instead of expressing their disagreement in the Holy Synod.

“For many, it would be more convenient if we kept silent - this would greatly simplify the task of manipulating the autocephaly of the Cyprus Church. But if we publicly declared our disagreement, we did it, because we cannot reconcile our conscience with what is evidently shared by Orthodoxy, as stated by the respected Archbishop of Albania Anastassy, ”answered Metropolitan Isaiah.

“The truth must be told and confessed, no matter how bitter it may be. The Archbishop acted publicly, without approval and outside the Synod, so we also reacted publicly and outside the Synod in order to save the independence of our autocephaly, ”the bishop summed up.
